Points to consider for Ladakh trip in summer

  • Gum boots are must. Better to purchase them before the trip. Make sure your gum boots are flexible enough. Because most of them are not comfortable for riding bike . We had really bad experience with it. We were not able to apply rear brakes and switch gears with those boots at all.
  • Excellent quality waterproof clothes, jackets, extra pair of socks, waterproof racksacks and waterproof bag covers are must. And dont rely on waterproof rack sacks completely. Make sure you put your clothes and imp. Stuffs first in plastic bags and then put those plastic bags into your rucksacks.
  • While purchasing and wearing your jacket make sure it should be able to get tightly packed especially around neck because freezing air, water and snow will atack first your neck which will give you pain in your neck, shoulder and back. These should be prevented to enjoy the trip pain free.
  • No need to bother about accomodation booking much. You will get various cheap and standard options of staying almost at every important stops. Just search and compare the available options then and there. Because pre-booking of accomodation will bound you with dates and you can not be cent percent certain about your schedule as it get affect by various constraints like weather, riots, permits, etc.
  • Only do pre hotel bookings for cities like delhi, manali and leh. Because there you will save a lot by doing pre bookings.
  • Online homework is good thing to do but keep one thing in mind. People and system in and near ladakh dont rely over internet as much as we do. So it is better to keep print out of everything.
  • Rohtang pass permit is must. Which you can get online 1 week prior to your visit. It is better to take permits for 2 or more possible dates for your visit because it is only ₹ 50 per bike but if you do not have a permit it will lead you to some troubles. Keep couple of more things in mind. Acc. To current rules tuesday is the date for maintanince of rohtang pass, so dont plan your visit to rohtang on that day and the other thing is they won't allow you to pass it before 6 AM. 1 more suggestion, better to contact manali tourism office few days prior to your visit about the rules because they keep on changing rules every year.
  • Keep your first and last day in leh easeful.
  • On first day in leh, take in-line permit for pangong, nubra and other nearby places from tourism office which will open at 10 AM. ( in line permit is required for all tourists. 400 is the charge per person plus 20 per day for the permit validity.  Secondly, better to get your bike serviced on the same day.
  • Dont forget to take medicine with you for high altitude sickness like DIAMOX, etc. And take 1 tablet each night starting from manali to manali.
  • Take enough packet of electrol with you and keep your self hyderated.
  • Distance between manali to leh is 500 km approx. People usually take break at sarchu which is around 4500 m above sea level and it is difficult to spend night at such high altitude especially when your body is not use to it. So it is better to take night stay at jispa which is around 170 km from manali and then start early on next morning to cover rest of the journey to leh.
  • If your taking bikes on rent from delhi or anywhere else make sure you check your bikes throughly and make a video of its current condition. Check the condition of chain spocket, brakes, clutch plate, engine oil level, btry and lights fitting, and every other things possible. They will play smart and try to give you bikes in rush, so that you won't be able to find the cons.
  • Sooner or later you will realise it but trust me don't wait for the realisation point. Daily start your journey early morning probably before sun rise. So that you could complete it before sunset. Because riding in evening is really tough.
  • Keep a day after every 2,3 days to laze around so that you or some of you dont feel like you doing a job of riding only. It will definitely help you in kicking a new start.
  • Everyone please Keep downloaded offline google maps in your phone of all the imp. Places. Because you won't get good nerwork connectivity anywhere.
  • Know your bike and try to learn how to fix the basic problems of your bikes.
  • Chain lube is must for every bike. Keep greacing your chain every 200 km or less.
  • If you are taking rental bikes from any other state than kashmir. You have to pay ₹ 500 per bike to the kashimir rental association. I am not sure weather they are authorised or not but they wont allow you to cross chk posts near leh without it.
  • It is better to take some stuffs to eat. But aloo parantha is available almost everywhere.
  • Leh is beautiful city. Take out some time for citywalk. Go to MAIN MARKET, experience tibetan cafes, go to art galleries. You will definitely able to preserve some good memories with yourself.
  • Since it is a long journey, if you want to enjoy it fully please stick to the schedule.
  • Wear riding gears, they really protect you. And ladhak carrier is also required. It will make your journey more convinent. RIDE SAFE.
